International Volunteer Day celebrates everyday heroes
5th December will be International Volunteer Day. We can contribute to conscious communities and transform systems through volunteering. This is a time to recognise how everyday volunteers change lives.
When settling into an a new place, I knew I needed community. Pandemic restrictions had eased. I wanted professional networking and friends in my area. Voluntary community groups provided inclusive diverse community when needed. Some of these new faces became a support network. Others inspired fun creativity. This is one of several life phases in which volunteers shaped my life. I appreciate any opportunity to express gratitude, including International Volunteer Day.
My fondest memories involved communities of volunteers - travelling, speaking on stages, using professional skills for good causes and forming what would become enduring friendships. We truly do receive when we give.
It is worth acknowledging that we can provide value through other means besides freely giving our time. However, there is a real need for people to contribute in their spare time. We need both - commercial value in some areas and priceless generous volunteer work too. The world needs both.
In the lead up to International Volunteer Day, I hope everyone may get involved and celebrate those who already serve.
Peace,
MSW
