Ways to help those in need during this cold winter

The east coast of Australia feels extra cold this winter. As you’re rugging up and staying cosy indoors, consider helping those struggling this season.

Donate food and bathroom supplies.

The Samaritans are partnering with Merewether SLSC for a winter collection on 9th July. I hope to donate whole and minimally processed plant-based foods such as wholemeal spaghetti, brown rice, Weet-Bix, oats and whole wheat noodles. Someone might also appreciate Vegemite and sugar-free jam for fun.

These organisations are also welcoming donations of toiletries. This is an opportunity for people to give organic, natural disposable supplies. You could provide eco nappies or menstrual supplies. Why not ask the organisers if they accept new, unopened reusable products?

Donate clothes and linen where needed.

Do you feel tempted to donate your unwanted clothes and blankets? Now could be the right time to give away things you don’t expect to use. Contact relevant organisations to ask them about their criteria for second-hand products and if they are taking donations. Australians buy so many garments that there is an excess. Some stores reject donations because they have too much.

Attend charity meetings and events.

Not-for-profit organisations host fundraising and awareness events at various levels of formality. Whether you prefer a gala dinner or a marathon, any gathering should help to bring charitable needs into the collective consciousness.

Have you ever been to a Rotary club? The stereotype might be a particular demographic, but anyone can get involved. Do similar organisations meet in your local area or online? Reach out to those groups and ask how you can support them.

Volunteer for events and ongoing charitable efforts.

If you have more spare time than physical goods to give, consider volunteering to help groups that distribute supplies to those in need. Each not-for-profit organisation usually needs people with various skill sets and professional backgrounds. If you know how to knit a blanket or baby booties, someone will be interested in what you can provide. Meanwhile, NFPs also need business-like efforts such as publicising giveaways and balancing the books.

Share charitable news.

Hosts want to spread the word whenever events and services are established to support people. They need to inform the people who need what they give, the people who could help, the media outlets and other organisations that could collaborate. You can help get the word out by sharing charitable news through word of mouth and social media.
