Lifestyle is key to a better life

Whether you are looking to improve your work, relationships or personal wellbeing, lifestyle can improve it all.

When watching TV shows, I used to notice that the successful characters had extremely unhealthy habits. They would eat junk food from a vending machine and have a few too many drinks. That is not sustainable in real life. We need to look after ourselves to maintain capability.

I recently became burned out. I had been rushing around, too busy for a proper meal. I stayed up an hour or two later than I should have and then woke up earlier than I could handle. Burnout is real. Seriously. But there are alternatives.

Self-care is essential, not optional. We all need to pursue these choices to improve our lives and the world.

Food to fuel a better life

Abundant quantities of minimally processed and whole plants can provide longer-lasting energy to fuel a more successful day.

We can all agree that excessive amounts of ultra-processed foods cause damage. Prioritise the opposite to look after your career and yourself.

Connect with communities face-to-face.

Human beings evolved for in-person social interaction. We were built to need it.

Mindful breaks can reset and refocus attention.

I recently had the sort of afternoon that is filled with too many emails. The silly sort. I stepped away from the computer for fifteen minutes and listened to a meditation. Honestly, life can be a bit mental. We need to maintain practices to calm the stress and approach challenges with more clarity.

Getting enough sleep is the new measure of success.

For many years, professionals would boast about their sleep deprivation. It was like a sign of dedication. However, a counter-cultural trend is growing. Arianna Huffington particularly champions the cause. People are waking up to the importance of sleeping enough to ensure we are well enough to do what is needed.
