People need the hippies

Humanity needs the hippies. We all need to live healthier, happier lives. The general population is unlikely to turn free-spirited, but they can benefit from the perspectives of modern-day hippies.

They understand healthy eating.

Listen to the folks who eat organic whole vegetables, fruits, grains, nuts, seeds and legumes. Simmer lentils. Chuck in some chickpeas. Blend hemp into smoothies. I learned my cooking skills by watching mindful veg chefs on YouTube. Some of my favourite meals in Queensland were from the Hari Krishnas (I don’t follow that religion, but I like their creative meals). I follow yogis who prioritise whole organic plants, even if their diets and beliefs vary. Sure, we can also now find researchers and health experts who advocate for healthy habits. But the alternative cultures are great teachers of wholesome eating because of their values and lifestyles.

They are resourceful.

Try the ideas from the crunchy minimalists and zero-waste communities. You can save money and simplify your life by following these lifestyles. Reuse jars. Wear second-hand clothing pieces that are in a good condition and quality. Consciously buy only what you truly need. Grow and regrow food. Make your own better versions of store-bought products. Fix things instead of throwing them away. By implementing thrifty practices, we can use resources more responsibly and abundantly.

They value generosity and community.

Humans evolved to connect, including face-to-face social interactions. This concept feels obvious but needs attention in this post-pandemic era that is focused on digital solo work and social media. People need each other for practical, emotional and spiritual support. And I prefer communities that embrace open-mindedness. You can trust the ‘woo-woo’ groups to gather in uplifting ways. Wherever you are on the spectrum from mainstream to alternative, you can find your ‘tribe’ that accepts anyone who respects everyone else.

They support ethical and sustainable businesses.

There is a growing demand and need for ethical business. The fashion industry must become more sustainable and improve working conditions. There are questionable practices in the chocolate, coffee, palm oil and coconut milk industries - to name a few. Local production is said to reduce emissions compared to overseas imports. We can look to the small business owners and creators of natural, conscious products.

They find calmness in this stressful world.

Alternative wellness types were meditating before it became cool. Curious minds looked at the chakras before those concepts became associated with Gwyneth. And some meditative practices are emotionally enhanced with essential oils. We live in a fast-paced society that becomes overloaded with information and activity. People always needed some sort of spiritual practice or calming routine. Mindful habits are needed as much as ever.

They understand self-care.

I grew up with the protestant ethics of becoming selfless, generous and patient. Those values may feel beneficial to the right extent and context. But instead of pouring our energy out to others until we feel empty, we can fill our cups to overflow. This is why I also turn to self-care and wellness leaders for ways to mentally and physically thrive.
