Busting a myth about fruit

It’s time to bust the assumption about fruit and sugar. We have all heard it. People wonder about the healthiness of fruits because of their natural sugar. Here’s the truth.

Fruit provides benefits that outweigh the natural sugars - which are better than refined added sugar, anyway. We can feel hydrated from a watery orange, boost our brain health with berries, get more vitamins into our bodies and diversify our fibre consumption for gut health.

Whole fruits are much better for us than other snacks. You can nibble on fresh berries on the go instead of lollies. Punnets are often easily available wherever you can find a supermarket. Mango blends into smoothies that sweeten green drinks. Smoothie bowls refresh us more than ice cream.

Here’s a bonus idea to pursue additional wellness from fruit. If you want to feel extra reassured, you could seek organic produce in your local area. Some coastal towns and cities have access to local growers. You can visit farmers’ markets or the farms. These foods will feel fresher and skip the sprays that may be on conventional foods.

You could also try growing your own berries, watermelon or citrus trees. See what happens.

The next time you hear someone complaining about the natural sugar in fruit, you can helpfully share the benefits of this wonderful whole plant.
