Really looking after yourself
Looking after yourself. TV will tell you it’s about heating a frozen meal. Marketing may tell you it’s about feeling pampered. I believe we can look after ourselves through balanced responsible self-care. It’s about connecting with our surroundings and ourselves. This is what I did this week to look after myself.
Be around people
People need people! It’s a fact. I had a million excuses to avoid social gatherings. Then I realised I need community - for inspiration, guidance, education, spiritual energy and network contacts. We need people because it’s good for the gut. And the soul.
Know your cycle
I want to find a full moon circle because my biological cycle happens to coincide with it. I need to anticipate when my emotions may be further swayed. Plan more self-care at that time. Then plan more work afterwards. Go with the flow.
Work meaningfully
Work on the thing that can make a difference even if it’s intimidating. Work on something meaningful. Make a living but also work on passion projects. Find meaning in both. But don’t let work get in the way of the precious fleeting moments with loved ones. It’s a fine line, that balancing act.
Pray and meditate
I had a hell of a week or two. I found myself hopelessly quietly praying. Calmly asking God (the universe) to look after me. When I felt ready re-centre myself, calm down at the end of the night, I listened to meditation apps and podcasts. We need to connect with something greater than ourselves. The power of humanity, nature and whatever sustains it all.
Love yourself (and forgive)
It’s easier said than done. Sometimes I need to simply revisit my favourite book about self-care (it’s the one by Brigid Lowry, for those who are interested). Every so often, I frankly need to plan some therapy. I mostly generally need to be present, breathe, forgive myself and get on with balanced responsibilities. Love yourself however you need.
