Women who dress sustainably
Eco fashion exists in a variety of forms - ranging from second hand clothing to fair trade pieces made from natural sustainable materials. Eco-conscious women are setting the right example. Here are some role models in the world of sustainable fashion.
Emma Watson
Emma Watson is one of the faces of sustainable fashion. She is also known for feminism and films. The actress, who is most recognised as Hermione Granger in the Harry Potter franchise, was named as the number one supporter of GoodOnYou.eco. She said in this article, "I support Good On You because I need to know my clothes do not harm our precious planet or its people." Having walked on the red carpet for decades, Watson was often asked who designed her outfits. She believes there is more to the important context than the branding of a piece. She told GoodOnYou, "There’s a bigger story to be told about the conditions in which our clothes are made, the resources that have been used and the impact they’ve had on communities." The entire life cycle of a product, including the sustainability, is a story to tell.
Duchess Meghan
Meghan Markle, now Meghan, Duchess of Sussex, has supported sustainable fashion brands. She wore a dress by Hope for Flowers , which claims to be making "Responsibly designed clothing for the modern woman," in 2020. Meghan's eco outfits made headlines a few years ago. Meghan and Harry's Archewell appears to now emphasise compassion.
Duchess Catherine
Kate Middleton, now Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge, re-wears outfits and wears some sustainable brands. She wore a dress by Faithful the Brand in 2020. It's ok. We don't all dress like royalty. Guess what. We can be inspires by the affordable option of wearing things we have instead of buying something new. Apparently the most sustainable outfit is the one you already own.
Stella McCartney
Stella McCartney, the fashion designer and a daughter of Sir Paul McCartney, is a hero for sustainable cruelty-free fashion. The Business of Fashion recently named Stella "Fashion's Activist in Chief." The McCartney family is known for their various efforts to help the environment and animals.
Honestly, I wondered whether this designer's products would be affordable enough. The answer is maybe. An organic cotton children's tee shirt is discounted to $AUD45. Yes, it is more expensive than shopping for second hand clothing. But this could be accessible for families. Also, a quality piece of clothing will last for a long time. When a kid grows out of the top, be assured it should have more life when passed on to the next owner as second hand. Now that's real sustainable children's clothing.
Stella McCartney shared in April, "So incredibly proud to see Dad @PaulMcCartney wearing our Stella x #Greenpeace limited-edition collab. My parents are why I learned to fight for Mother Earth — especially vital, precious ecosystems like the Amazon. Now, I want to save it for my children." They gained 5,000 signatures to support Greenpeace UK's Act for the Amazon petition. This designer included printed tees that featured, "vintage eco-activist graphics."
Stella McCartney explained the connection between environmental and vegan activism, "Join us in protecting the Amazon from being cut down for industrial agriculture and meat production." This was mentioned when actress Cameron Diaz wore one of the tees.
